Digital Technology, Threatening Art and Culture One Form at A Time

Spyware No Comments »

Several friends of mine used to debate at length “What is art?” — now that digital art, guerilla art, performance art, advertising collateral, and the blending of media have blurred the boundaries of what was once a clear-cut discipline. Art’s not just pure visual painting and sculpture any more that gets hung and revered on the walls of museums–more and more people are looking for art that’s interactive, conceptual, interested in the pop social experience, and blends a range of media. While traditionalists who hang paintings in museums might feel that these new art forms aren’t true art, new digital and interactive creations are still infused in our culture and experience, influencing our aesthetic tastes.

Jeff Clark of Neoformist is one such artist blurring the boundaries between programming, verbal, and visual art. Using a scripted algorithm he generates portraits of famous people and animals using an algorithm that creates words in the colors and patterns needed to create the portrait. Some examples feature a shot of Barack Obama created with the words “Yes We Can” and Albert Einstein with the word “Genius.” Very cool– go take a look.

McColo Takedown = Street Justice?

Uncategorized No Comments »

When McColo was stopped in its tracks last week, most of the online world cheered. The rhyme and reason behind the development mattered little in light of seeing less spam. Only now, there’s at least some question of whether or not things went through the right channels.

McColo Takedown = Street Justice?
McColo Takedown = Street Justice?

No official ruling against McColo was involved, after all. Law enforcement officials weren’t even in figurative sight, since a tip from The Washington Post was what spurred McColo’s service providers to take action. McColo didn’t get a chance to respond, and it might have just been oblivious to all the spammy activity.

There’s also a concern over what could be considered collateral damage. If not all of McColo’s customers were involved in “bad” stuff, some of them must rightly view the situation they’ve been placed in as being rather unfair.

Individuals participating in a Slashdot discussion tended to agree that what happened to McColo is not a case of vigilantism, however, since McColo’s service providers were just informed of TOS violations.

And even if what happened last week can be called vigilantism, we should all remember that movie audiences tended to side with the Charles Bronson-type characters in “Death Wish” and similar movies.

Idicaf

Spyware No Comments »

Idicaf trojan is a dangerous one because it is capable of installing other computer parasites. Idicaf usually installs itself secretly without raising any suspicion and then it starts its malicious job. Idicaf may modify security settings on the compromised machine so that a user is not notified about actions made by the trojan. Idicaf installs other malwares. Those might be fake security tools, adware, malicious toolbars, trojans or other computer parasites. Idicaf is not a big security threat on its own, but it brings other malwares that can do much damage.

Idicaf spreads like the other trojans. It may use software vulnerabilities on online chats and it may hide on spam email or on a file from illegitimate software downloads website.
